4 Elusive Pokemon That You Die Die Cannot Catch in Singapore

Youliang Teo When he’s not caught up with the real world, Teo Youliang dreams of simply grabbing a rucksack and setting off on an adventure of a lifetime. Whether it means venturing through unknown places, meeting new faces, or frustratingly figuring out a travel map for hours, you can be sure that there isn’t any other place he’d rather be. He’s also content with a hot cup of tea, and writing stories at the comfort of his home.

If you’re scratching your head, wondering where to find the last missing few Pokémon from your collection, chances are, they simply can’t be found here in Singapore. Sure, you might get them from a hatched egg, but it’s going to take plenty of luck to do so!

If you’re looking to prove to be the very best out of the other trainers here, it’s probably time to travel overseas and start tracking down these elusive ones.

Anyway, what better reason to travel than Pokémon, right?

1. Tauros

This bull-like Pokémon is native to the North American continent, where local players have commonly seen it turn up on their phone screens.

Populated areas such as Central Park in New York City are great places to land your first capture of a wild Tauros while doing a little sightseeing! There are plenty of other things to do while waiting, such as going on a bike tour, watching a street performer or even taking a horse carriage ride!

Daytona Beach in Florida is also another location that trainers should check out. Historically known for their association with motorsports and NASCAR, the beach is also known for miles of pale sand and clear ocean waters! It’s the perfect place for long walks and relaxation, while you await the appearance of your four-legged quarry.

There are also rumours that Tauros tend to appear in rodeo-related areas. It’s a sketchy source, but if you’re interested in the idea of watching cowboys and cowgirls wrangle against real bulls, you should definitely check out a rodeo show at Wyoming, South Dakota or Texas. The sight of a professional rider easily taming a raging bull might get you blushing in embarrassment for struggling on your virtual capture!

2. Kangaskhan

If you’ve seen a Kangaskhan before, it’ll be pretty obvious where this Pokémon would be most commonly found. This kangaroo-like creature can be found in Australia and rumoured to be in its nearby countries as well, such as New Zealand and New Guinea.

However, it’s not as simple as waltzing in and throwing a Poké Ball in the first five minutes while you’re in town! Even to locals, it’s rare to even spot a Kangaskhan, so you’ll need to exercise plenty of patience and pay extra attention to your phone screen.

One good place to check out is the Sydney Opera House, where many players have reported encountering and capturing Kangaskhans. The nearby Pokéstops also have permanent lures, meaning that your chances of encountering one would be much higher.

In the meantime, however, you should definitely explore the  city! The spectacular view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city skyline is something straight out from the movies.

The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens is another place where players can try their luck at, with the high number of Pokéstops and lures available. Local fans have also reported seeing wild Kangaskhans appearing on their trackers as well, which brings it down to an individual’s patience and luck. So relax, wander around the beautifully kept gardens, and enjoy the calming lush greenery as you wait!

3. Mr. Mime

This Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon can be found in most parts of Europe. Players have encountered Mr. Mime during their adventures, especially in crowded cities and parks around the region. However, similar to Kangaskhan, it’s not going to be a simple bag and tag expedition. Even the local fans are having a hard time tracing down its exact location, so stay alert!

There’s no better place to start your hunt than Paris! This tourist country is often associated with stereotypical French street mimes, and is a probable bet that you can find virtual ones as well. The best places to hook up for a Mr. Mime catch would be hot tourist spots, where there are plenty of Pokéstops and active lures. The Eiffel Tower and the Luxembourg Gardens are good spots to camp while enjoying a little scenery!

The city of London is also home to a population of Mr. Mimes! Local players have bumped into this Pokémon at populated areas, with many encounters occurring at the Tate Britian. This art museum showcases an era of Britsh artistry that would appeal to those with an appreciation of culture, which would probably explain why a mime Pokémon would be hanging out here!

Others, however, have mentioned that waiting by the various Pokéstop lures at the Tower of London would be a safer bet. Especially since developer Niantic recently rolled out an update that apparently scrambled the Pokémon locations, it’s better to lie in and wait for a Mr. Mime to pop up rather than going on a wild goose chase.

4. Farfetch’d

This peculiar duck Pokémon is rumoured to reside exclusively in Asia, especially in Japan. Reports suggest that Farfetch’d sightings usually occur in populated city districts and nearby parks. Fortunately, it’s one of the easier region-exclusive Pokémon to track down, so rejoice!

If you’re set on capturing one for yourself, your best bet is to head to Tokyo to begin your search. The Shinjuku district is the perfect place to nab a Farfetch’d while doing a little shopping and food sampling. The sheer number of departmental stores and eateries here will keep you entertained for sure; just remember to check your phone screen while wolfing down that second bowl of ramen!

The Imperial Palace is another hotspot for Farfetch’d activity, with a vast garden area that attracts all kinds of Pokémon to the venue. Consider taking a guided tour while you’re here and take in the wonderful sights as you walk along the palace grounds. Depending on the month, you might even get to witness cherry blossoms. It’s an experience that’s definitely worthwhile, even if you can’t find your target!

Ueno Park is a decent place to check out as well, with plenty of Pokéstops scattered around. It is also a favourite haunt by local trainers. With the lures constantly refreshed, you’ll have a higher chance of running into a Farfetch’d and other rare Pokémon. Just make sure to be aware of your surroundings when you’re swiping your phone for that capture, else you’ll fall into the nearby Shinobazu Pond!

Others

Unfortunately, there are a few Pokémon that are still unavailable or have yet to be discovered by anyone. This includes the legendary bird trio: Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos, the shape-shifting Ditto, and the last two Pokédex entries: Mewtwo and Mew. The closest that anyone has gotten to seeing one in existence is screenshots and videos from an apparent Articuno owner in Ohio.

However, Niantic has confirmed in interviews and panels that they would eventually release it. Fans have speculated that there would be public events staged around the world, similar to their previous mobile game, Ingress, which hosted ‘Anomalies’ that required players to complete group objectives across the globe.

This can be further seen in one of the trailers, where a scene of Pokémon trainers in a packed Times Square battle against a Mewtwo and break into a cheer when the digital screens flash after a successful capture. Many feel that this is a clue, suggesting that trainers will likely need to work together to battle a legendary Pokémon and get a chance at capturing one.

If the rumours are true, then be prepared! If you’re determined on completing the Pokédex and claiming the local throne as the best Pokémon trainer, you’ll need to travel far and wide to participate in these future events.

Has this list inspired you to pack your bags and prepare for a trainer’s journey? Do remember that the eggs you hatch still have a chance on giving you a region-locked Pokémon as well! There’s still a way on collecting these Pokémon for those who are insistent about staying in the country.

Do remember that the eggs you hatch still have a chance on giving you a region-locked Pokémon as well! There’s still a way on collecting these Pokémon for those who are insistent about staying in the country.

Of course, if the idea of a cross-country Pokémon capture trip excites you, then by all means! After all, the core of the game focuses on travelling and exploring. Go out there for an epic holiday and be the first one to boast an (almost) full Pokémon collection when you return home!

5 Challenges I Encountered on My Virgin Trip to China

Youliang Teo When he’s not caught up with the real world, Teo Youliang dreams of simply grabbing a rucksack and setting off on an adventure of a lifetime. Whether it means venturing through unknown places, meeting new faces, or frustratingly figuring out a travel map for hours, you can be sure that there isn’t any other place he’d rather be. He’s also content with a hot cup of tea, and writing stories at the comfort of his home.

When your holidays take you to a new country, there is bound to be uncertainty on what to expect. This is even more so if you come unprepared, perhaps with only hastily done research a day or two before the flight. More than excited, you feel panicky.

I know because I have been in that exact position before. When I visited Chongqing, China for the first time, I did not know what to anticipate or prepare myself for. Sure, my friends who have been to China before gave useful tips and stories to ease the anxiety, but actually being there myself was a whole new experience.

Also read: 10 Unusual Things You Will Encounter in China

Thus, without further ado, here are five things that you can prepare yourself for physically and mentally, before venturing into unfamiliar territories.

1. Language barrier

When I boarded my flight to Chongqing at Changi Airport, I was placed in the row of seats that was beside the emergency exit. One of the air stewardesses approached me and briefed me on the safety procedures.

The problem was she only spoke Chinese, and I could not. What was worse was that she assumed I could, because I was half-Chinese and looked the part. I had no idea how to tell her that I could not understand a single word she spoke, but thankfully someone from my tour group noticed my plight and translated her words to me.

Landing at Chonqing Jiangbei International Airport five hours later, I had to struggle through a conversation with the customs officer. Thankfully, he spoke and understood a little English, and we managed to clear my entry after a long period of time.

There are just too many incidents that I can list out throughout my stay in Chongqing that are similar to the ones above. What I would like to highlight, however, is if you are intending to visit rural areas, be prepared for communication issues. Either learn a few simple phrases to get by during your visit, or bring a travel companion who can translate for you!

Else, be ready to wave a lot with hand gestures and signs as a last ditch effort to convey your message across to the locals!

2. Changing weather

Before heading on the trip, I was told to bring plenty of thick clothing due to the low temperatures in Chongqing. I did not take this advice seriously, as the local temperature difference was about 7 to 8 degrees from Singapore. I thought that it could not be as cold as they claimed it to be. However, feeling that it was better to be safe than sorry, I brought a few winter jackets.

Turns out, their warning was spot-on. The minute I stepped out of the plane and into the airport’s shuttle bus, I felt the chill. Taking out one of my winter jackets from my backpack, I instantly gave thanks that I had the foresight to stuff one in my carry-on baggage!

It was much colder in the mountains, where your hands would eventually get stiff and uncomfortable under the cold air. It was fortunate that I brought a pair of insulated gloves as well, under the advice of my dad. There were those in my tour group, however, who were unfortunate to not bring a pair, and had to resort to stuffing their hands into their pockets or constantly rubbing them together to generate heat.

Just when I thought it could not get any colder, it started to rain. The temperatures dropped to single-digits, and although there was no snow, it felt like I was caught in a blizzard. It was quite the encounter, for someone who has never travelled to a cold region before! Luckily I came well-prepared, and the experience was a pleasant one.

Thus, if you are headed to a country that has radically different weather conditions from your home, make sure to be adequately prepared – even if it means trying to shut your overflowing suitcase with thick insulated coats. It is always better to stay ready for the unknown!

3. Unfamiliar cuisine

As a Muslim, eating at the local restaurants was a challenge. I could not differentiate which dishes had pork or lard in it, and had to often resort to asking which ones I could consume and which ones to avoid.

Thankfully, special requests were made in advance for my sake, and the restaurants often had chicken, fish and beef ready for my choosing. As I was eating, I shuddered to think what would have happened if I came to Chongqing alone. It was bad enough that I could not communicate with the locals – conveying special orders to a local waiter or waitress would have been a nightmare!

Their dishes took a while getting used to, with the different spices and cooking styles used. Even the spiciness of the food was different to those in Singapore – spicy Chinese dishes had a lingering aftertaste, as compared to the straight burning sensation I was used to.

Do not get me wrong! The food was definitely delicious in its unique way, but it was still different, and I needed time to get over the dissimilarities to truly appreciate the cuisine.

So do be prepared to expand your food choices if you are headed to places unknown. Make sure to do your research and learn a little about the local bites, especially when you are adhering to certain diet restrictions. The last thing you need on a fun holiday trip is to be on a fruits-and-vegetables diet!

4. Differences in norms

After a tiring day exploring the mountain trails and wandering around the city, we retired to our hotel rooms for a well-deserved rest. As I bid goodnight to my tour group and closed my room door behind me, I realised that it was very warm and there was no form of air-conditioning.

The idea of a hotel room not having air-conditioning sounded very peculiar to me. Under the impression that it was not turned on, I began scouting around the walls to see if I could find the switch or buttons.

I encountered a small console near the front door and began fiddling with the device. It was already turned on, but I could not hear any form of ventilation nor feel a sudden drop in temperature. I tried lowering the temperature, but it made no difference.

I picked up the phone and called the registration counter to see if they could send anyone up. Unfortunately, the receptionist could not speak English and after a few minutes of fruitless conversing, I eventually hung up. I tried messaging my tour group for help, but they were fast asleep, obviously tired from the day’s exhaustions.

Hot and flustered, I walked around the room to figure out a solution, when I felt a cold breeze from the windows. Approaching it, I realised the windows were wide open, and it was grilled. It only served to add to my frustrations, as I wondered why they would prevent me from closing the windows at all!

However, it suddenly dawned upon me that the rooms did not need air-conditioning because the air outside was already cold. Realising this, I tossed opened the curtains and sure enough, cold air came flowing in and made the room much more comfortable to get a good night’s rest.

This was apparently a norm in many hotel rooms, as I eventually learnt tomorrow morning from my tour guide. I could not help but feel surprised (and a little embarrassed!) as I had always thought that air-conditioning was mandatory in any hotel room.

It just goes to show that you should be ready to expect the unexpected if you are travelling to an unfamiliar country. Their standards and way of life may be quite different from what we are used to, and it might even open your eyes at times!

5. Usage of internet

china challenges

As I was fiddling with my phone at one of our first restaurants at Chongqing, taking advantage of their Wi-Fi, it occurred to me that I should share some photos of the food I have been happily enjoying with my family and friends. To my annoyance, my Facebook app could not load despite multiple refreshes.

Figuring it was the poor signal from the router, I tried Googling something else instead. Unfortunately, that plan did not work out as well, with the page remaining blank after clicking on search. Bringing up Twitter to see if I could load earlier messages, I had no such luck.

It left me confused because I was still receiving messages from Whatsapp and Telegram. It definitely was not an Internet issue; else I would not have heard a single word from these chat applications. Turning to one of my tour group members, I asked him if he knew what was up with my phone.

He looked at me incredulously and eventually burst out laughing. He assured me that my phone was perfectly fine. He went on to explain that China had banned the websites I tried to access and it was impossible to access them without a virtual private network.

It hit me like a truck then, when I remembered all the news reports I glanced upon about China’s Internet censorship. I was also left dismayed because that meant that I could not update myself with my social network for the next three days. It was quite the unexpected loss when something we consider so trivial gets taken away from you!

If there is anything to take away from this tale, it is to make sure that you know the regulations of your country of interest in the trip. You will never know when something that you are often used to can be absent or banned.

china challenges

As much as it sounds fun to jump into the unknown without any thought, it is not as fun when that situation turns unfavourable. With these tips on hand, your experiences in a new country would definitely be less stressful and more enjoyable. Make sure to plan meticulously before the trip, to avoid being caught in an inconvenient spot, and do what you planned to do, have a really great time!

Insider’s Guide to Cebu: All You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Charmaine Acha Charmaine loves random weekend trips, technology and coffee. Guided by her travel mantra "chill and travel", she enjoys unplanned escapades without compromising leisure. Her free hours are spent reading a book, watching movies or thinking about her next possible adventure.

If you’re planning a trip to Cebu, you’re one lucky reader to have landed on this page because I am about to give you some basic facts and insider scoop on what Cebu has to offer! No sugar-coating, what you read is what you get, I guarantee you that!

In the unlikely event that you don’t know where Cebu is, it’s right in the middle of the Philippines.

Here’s a map (with popular destinations) to make it easier for you:

Basic facts

Cebu is made up of one strip of main island and 167 surrounding islands and islets.

Cebu City, the capital, is part of the Cebu Metropolitan Area together with Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City and Danao City.

Locals speak Cebuano (mother tongue), Filipino (national language) and English.

As with other places in the country, Cebu enjoys a tropical climate with dry and wet seasons.

Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is the second busiest airport in the country, after Ninoy Aquino International Aiport (NAIA) in Manila.

Sinulog, Cebu’s grandest festival is celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January

Getting around

cebu travel guide

Getting around Cebu is quite easy. Almost everyone can understand and speak English so in case you get lost, just ask the locals and they’ll be more than happy to help you out. However, there might be pickpockets and snatchers around so don’t flash your gadgets or important stuff while on the road especially in the highly urbanised areas.

From the airport or piers, taxis are your best mode of transport. Don’t be ripped off by the drivers who offer fixed rates because taxis must run by meter. Sad but true, foreign visitors are the most vulnerable to this scheme. Fixed rates are acceptable if you’re going to a municipality that’s pretty far from the city. By the way, GrabTaxi is already in Cebu City so you can use the app for a safer and more convenient way to hail a taxi.

The jeepney is the main mode of transport within the city with a starting fare of PHP8. When you wish to go to the provincial areas, buses are widely available with starting points from North Bus or South Bus Terminal.

In small towns, habal-habal (motorcycle) and tuk-tuk (tricycle) are your best means to slither through the narrow streets. The fare usually ranges from PHP8 to PHP30 depending on the distance.

Where to stay

Shangri-la Mactan, Cebu

Cebu features a range of accommodations from expensive 5-star hotels to budget-friendly inns depending on your budget and interest. So the right question would be – do you prefer to stay in the city, the province or a place in between?

If you choose the city, there are many accommodations around. Book a hotel or inn that‘s near IT Park, Ayala or SM because they are the city’s business hubs where food and hangout places are plenty.

If you want to stay in a rustic environment, then hop on a bus, and get out of the metro! The north and south municipalities (look at the map again), can be easily reached by bus. I suggest you stick with Ceres Liner as their buses and services are way better than other bus operators.

Want to relax but don’t want to be too far from the city? Stay in Mactan Island where various kinds of hotels and beach resorts are available.

What to eat

You can find almost all types of food in Cebu. Restaurants and eateries offer different cuisines from American to European and Asian, but of course, you must try the local food. Cebu is famous for lechon (roasted pig) and puso (hanging rice), and there’s no way you can leave the island without trying them. Other must-try local treats include siomai, humba, dried mangoes, danggit and many kinds of seafood!

Things to do

You can seriously do a lot of exciting things in Cebu and here are just a handful of them! Have fun!

2. Canyoneering

Scream and jump! Canyoneering in Badian is definitely a must-do adventure in Cebu. Several guides are available for this adrenaline-inducing activity but I personally recommend Highland Adventures because I’ve tried their service myself.

You can go scuba diving in Mactan or Malapascua Island. Say hi to the thresher sharks in Malapascua for me!

6. Historical tour

When exploring the capital city, go to the downtown area and from there, you can walk through different historical landmarks such as Colon Street, Cathedral church, Sto. Nino church, Magellan’s Cross, Museo Sugbu and Plaza Independencia.

Hop on a bus or rent a car and embark on a road trip to the North or down South. You’ll discover a lot of natural wonders and historical places along the way.

How to get there

The fastest and most convenient way to reach Cebu is by airplane. It usually takes about an hour from Manila or from other domestic destinations. Cebu has direct international flights to and from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Incheon, Busan, Narita (Tokyo), Osaka and Taipei.

Major airlines operating in Cebu include Philippine Airlines, AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, SilkAir, Korean Air, Tigerair, and of course Cebu Pacific, the largest carrier in the Philippines! You can check their Facebook Page for the latest news and promo updates.

Cebu can also be reached by boat and ferry from domestic destinations such as Manila, Butuan, Cagayan, Davao, Ozamis, Iloilo, Leyte and Bohol among others.

10 Weird But Surprisingly Effective Korean Beauty Products You Will Love

Carissa Ng Carissa is fascinated by globalisation, the beauty of nature and the interdependence of diverse cultures. Her mind constantly drifts off to dreams of travelling around the world, because she wants to explore every continent and city. She is also a sleepyhead-sloth who has a huge weakness for rainbows, sushi, all things Korean, and adorable chubby babies.

PUT YOUR HANDS UP... if you have at least one KOREAN beauty product in your makeup pouch, ladies! And make space for MORE. We all know Korea has reaaaaally high standards of beauty, don’t we? And the numerous plastic surgery clinics that have a never-ending line of customers clearly attests to that.

Anyway, we have compiled a list of the WEIRDEST beauty products from Korea that are surprisingly quite effective! Don’t be fooled by its packaging...

1. TonyMoly Haeyo Mayo Hair Nutrition Pack

The name of this product is so adorable and catchy. HAEYO MAYO. The packaging is so deceiving as well! Who would’ve thought putting mayonnaise on your hair would leave it silky and shiny?! Containing a concoction of shea butter, egg yolk extract, vinegar and macadamia seed oil, it has a nice, light fragrance and will leave you with fantabulous-looking hair.

2. Besolbo Royal Salmon Egg Return Cream

I know...Doesn’t that look absolutely delectable?! But WAIT! Don’t start drooling, because unfortunately, it’s not edible. The Besolbo Royal Salmon Egg Return Cream is rich in minerals and vitamins that help to moisturise and nourish your skin! The application process is so simple as well: just take 23 pieces between your palm and mix them around till it turns to jelly, and then apply evenly over your face.

Please keep this beauty product in a VERY SAFE place...Because you never know who might eat it by accident!

3. Dear by Enprani Bounce Cheese Cream

Yet another beauty product that is modelled after food! Thankfully, it does not smell like cheese at all. However, its bouncy, sticky texture does bear a huge resemblance to melted mozzarella cheese which will certainly whet your appetite. Just looking at the product alone makes you hungry for sure. Nevertheless, it has received rave reviews for its hydrating and firming properties that help to moisturise your face and prevent ageing! You’ve got to try this out NOW.

4. Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask

This is the PERFECT mask to try with friends at sleepovers! The Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask is formulated with mud and charcoal to remove impurities and cleanse pores, leaving the skin soft and moisturised.

After 5 minutes of applying it to your face, the product will begin to bubble and transform into foamy, frothy goodness! The aftermath is just...HILARIOUS. Start snapping selfies or snapchat your cartoon-looking face and all your friends will thank you for the entertainment.

5. Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence

The Snail Bee High Content Essence contains two ingredients that make people falter: snail slime filtrate and BEE VENOM! Sounds insane, doesn't it?! Bee Venom is used to trick your skin into thinking that it has been stung by a bee. This causes blood to rush to your face, producing collagen and elastin which are highly beneficial for the skin. It ensures a softer, smoother skin texture, brighter complexion, and tackles damaged skin caused by acne as well.

Rave reviews have assured that it is extremely effective and highly recommended, so don’t let the ingredients deter you from buying this GENIUS product!

6. Imselene Donkey Milk Sleeping Mask Pack

DONKEY MILK?! Known for being rich in vitamins and minerals, it has been incorporated into skincare of course. This Donkey Milk Holic Sleeping Mask Pack has whitening and firming properties that leave you with brighter skin softer than a baby’s. It smells like coconut milkshake, and has a stringy and sticky texture which may make application rather difficult, but the results are WORTH IT. You won’t be able to stop touching your face the next morning, because it will be so soft and silky!

7. Skinfood Coffee Body Scrub

You don’t have to rush to grab your morning cuppa on the way to work at the nearest coffee joint anymore! Get your coffee fix through the Skinfood Coffee Body Scrub! Uniquely formulated with granulated coffee beans, brown sugar and honey, it nourishes the skin while gently exfoliating dead cells. Mmm...your skin will be so smooth, supple and FRAGRANT. How fantastic is that!

8. Berrisom Oops My Lips Tint

The Berrisom Oops My Lip Tint comes in eight vibrant colours, and the most unique part about this beauty product is that it is a PEEL OFF lip stain! Say whaaaat?! It promises to give you long-lasting, smudge-proof colour on your lips, just like a temporary tattoo. Simply apply it to your lips and let it rest for at least 15 minutes before peeling it off.

It is extremely loyal and stays on your lips even if you drink coffee, have brunch, or try to rub it off! You obviously have to be patient and gentle during the process of removing it, or you might end up with slight bleeding or excessive dead cell removal...But I’m totally sold. Go ahead and try experimenting with all the colours now!

9. Too Cool For School – Fresh Gore Sleeping Pack

The special ingredient in the Fresh Gore Sleeping Pack is none other than DRAGON’S BLOOD EXTRACT. Don’t freak out just yet! The extract comes from a TREE that is native to Peru, Ecuador and the Amazon. It is called dragon’s blood because of the red sap it produces that flows like blood when it is cut. Lightly tinted with a red/orange tinge, it helps to moisturise and brighten your skin. Go ahead and freak your friends out with this cool product!

10. Mizon Returning Starfish Cream

Just look at that beautiful packaging! Don’t you want to buy it already? The Mizon Returning Starfish Cream contains the special ingredient of... STARFISH EXTRACT! These qualities thus help to rejuvenate and revitalise dull and dry skin, as well as replenish the skin’s moisture and improve elasticity. Unfortunately, this product has been discontinued. Remember the last time you went away somewhere for a vacation? When it comes to packing, the first thing that pops in mind would be, don’t forget the camera! What does a passport matter anyway, right? It is just there for you to snap a picture together with your plane ticket and post it on Facebook so the whole world would know you’ll be flying off to Amsterdam. Hell, if you forgot your passport, you would at least take a picture of the airport and hashtag #fml.

Before the age Facebook and Instagram, pictures used to mean something. A picture used to symbolise an experience, an emotion – that’s why it was known to capture the moment, it paints a thousand words. Now, taking a photo evolved as similarly as having a tattoo. Both used to have value, now they virtually do not mean anything anymore, merely to please others around you, aiming to convey the image of perceived superiority. Yes, pictures do that too. Ever seen a vacation album of someone enjoying life in France that made you wonder how much your kidneys are worth to afford that getaway? Or if you have to add an extra half a liver? Exactly.

"Ever seen a vacation album of someone enjoying life in France that made you wonder how much your kidneys are worth to afford that getaway?"

Have you come across that friend on Facebook after a vacation and you scrolled through their pictures and think, Just why? They have a hundred seemingly identical photos of the same place, especially more when in a more luxurious place like Europe. Somehow, people have a need to hit a quota for a vacation photo album. You can’t come back with 10 photos, you need hundreds, and enough to stitch it together to make a motion picture when you get home.

I used to be excited about taking lots of pictures. Before I went on a long trip, my first thought was, ‘I need a good camera and good lenses". Personally, I like to dabble with a camera settings and I feel travelling was a way to explore different scenarios and picture compositions.

A couple of months into my travels, I looked back at the pictures I have taken and most of them had no impression on me whatsoever. I had the same emotional attachment to them as I do looking at my ex-girlfriend, or a wall. I realised I have only travelled through the eyes of the lens, most of them are really taken because I was there and I might as well waste some memory (or film, depending on how hipster you are) – thinking all this walking have to pay off somehow.

"I had the same emotional attachment to them as I do looking at my ex-girlfriend, or a wall."

What was worse was that I even posted some on social media, not for myself, but for others to see where I am and what I did. Those pictures meant zero to me, but I took it anyway because I felt obligated to feed the prying eyes of those who knew I was travelling. Not surprisingly, nearly all of those soulless pictures were pictures of so-called tourist spots or popular buildings. Sights to prove you were there when your heart really isn’t.

For the remaining ones, they were what pictures were made for. One look and they sparked a memory, a sensation and emotion of the moment – the excitement, fear and intensity. These are pictures worth taking, a picture that paints a thousand words. I have pictures taken, even though not having the perfect composition and saturation that puts me back in those shoes, imagining the cold breeze, the serenity and the nonchalance.

Most of these ‘pictures for others’ are ultimately pictures of buildings or sites that you have no interest in but go anyway because some website gave it a 5-star rating or said it is a must-go. Like most choices in life, they have been made for you. So you wake up early to rush there, take a million pictures of the Eiffel Tower or the Stonehenge because that is what everyone does, but in reality, to you it is just a giant dildo and an ancient big-ass Lego set.

I know what you are thinking, what in the arse is this guy talking about? The whole point of social media is to share! But that is not the point of a vacation. You take time off to unwind and get detached from your stressful environment, then you go on a trip to have a picture-taking spree to impress the people who don’t matter to you, probably the same people you were trying to get away from in the first place.

Sure, share your trip pictures and your adventures, don’t be selfish. But don’t do it to the point where you forget why you go on the trip in the first place. Travelling is for you and you only; do yourself a favour and live the moment because it does not come often.

There are plenty of hotspots around Singapore to encounter and catch these elusive critters. If anything, it’s a perfect excuse to travel around the country and do a little sightseeing while you’re on the quest of becoming the greatest trainer that’s ever lived!

Here’s a list of popular places in Singapore that sees the gathering of Pokémon GO players in their quest to catch 'em all.

1. Chinese Garden

Just directly beside the MRT station that shares the same name, Chinese Garden boasts a large number of PokéStops, places where you can collect items and Pokémon. There are at least 20 PokéStops scattered around the venue and its neighbour, the Japanese Garden.

While you’re constantly swiping your screen to gather everything, consider taking a visit to the ‘Bai Hong Qiao’ bridge for a short break from your expedition. Enjoy the scenic view of the Jurong Lake as you keep stock on the Pokémon you’ve caught so far!

Trainers who are looking to do battle can test out their mettle at the three gyms located nearby. You’ll definitely see many other players as well, attempting to claim the Gardens as their team’s territory!

2. Botanic Gardens

If the West is just too far for your liking, don’t worry! The Botanic Gardens is another place where PokéStops and gyms are abundant for the aspiring trainer. With the amazing fauna and attractions around the place, coupled with a Pokémon appearance every ten steps, it’s the perfect simulation route for players!

The National Orchid Garden is a must-visit, with its season zoning of colourful plants blending in four different areas. It’s the perfect place to rest your eyes after staring at your phone screen for hours. For those who still have the energy, the place is rumoured to be populated with Clefairies, just waiting to be added to your Pokédex!

If you’re worried about walking under the burning heat, you should consider visiting in the late afternoon to avoid sweating it out. There are also plenty of places to grab drinks from, so stock up and stay hydrated on your journeys.

3. Gardens by the Bay

At Gardens by the Bay, you can come across up to 62 PokéStops and 5 gyms scattered across the nature park. You’ll be compelled to take a scenic walk around the greenery just to amass the humongous number of items and Pokémon calling your name!

There’s no need to pay for an entry ticket to the conservatories; the outdoor zones are already crawling with Pokémon! The Far East Organisation Children’s Garden is the perfect excuse for parent players to let their children loose at the fun-filled water playground, while they attempt to add the nearby Meowths to their collection.

The authorities at Gardens by the Bay have also taken notice of the Pokémon GO trend, and kindly provided useful survival tips on their website for visiting trainers to take note!

4. Wildlife Reserves

The Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) recently released detailed maps of PokéStop and gym locations at their four parks – Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, River Safari and the Singapore Zoo. With a total whopping 78 PokéStops and 8 gyms placed around the wildlife exhibits, plus you’ll get to explore both the real and virtual animals at the same time!

The Treetop Trail at the Zoo has four PokéStops clustered tightly at its zone, a perfect stroll for a trainer. You’ll be able to position a Pokémon next to a Brown Lemur or a Cotton Top Tamarin for the perfect Instagram picture!

That’s not all, though! The WRS is also planning to include special Pokémon events and promotions at their parks in due time. Keep your fingers crossed for a chance at Mewtwo or one of the legendary birds!

5. Orchard Road

The busy roads of Orchard are jam-packed with Pokémon GO players and their adventures. The sheer amount of PokéStops and gyms littered across the streets are a paradise for trainers to fill up their collection at a fast pace. What’s more, the PokéStops will often have a lure on them, meaning that many Pokémon will pop up for grabs!

Many malls have jumped on the catching bandwagon as well in hopes of catching the wave and making profits. ION Orchard has announced that the PokéStops in their malls will be lured constantly until August 21 to attract more visitors. Players can also upload a screenshot of their proudest Pokémon capture at the shopping mall on its Facebook page for a chance to win shopping vouchers.

A friendly tip, though: make sure you stock up on plenty of Poké Balls, because you definitely don’t want to be caught empty-handed in the middle of a Pokémon catching spree. The feeling of watching everyone around you swiping their screens eagerly as you wait for the next refresh on a nearby PokéStop is the worst feeling ever!

6. Resorts World Sentosa

Looking for the iconic Pikachu that you sorely need for your collection? The Resorts World Sentosa is the perfect place to catch Pikachu, as well a great number of other rare Pokémon which call the island home.

The management has provided an in-depth guide for Pokémon GO players on places and landmarks to hunt down. From Electrabuzz to Electrodes at Universal Studios Singapore, to Squirtles and Horseas at the S.E.A Aquarium, you’ll be spoilt for choices on where to head next for your great big catch at Sentosa! It would be best to dedicate a whole day here to explore and capture Pokémon, while taking a break to enjoy the island’s other attractions.

The tough choice, however, would probably be whether to do it on a weekday or a weekend. True, weekends can get crowded with people, but that would also mean that the PokéStops would be constantly lured by other trainers! Decisions, decisions…

7. MRT Stations

Wherever there’s high human traffic, there’s a high number of PokéStops and gyms for the taking. The MRT stations around Singapore are no different! Don’t be surprised to see adults in office wear intensely swiping their phone on the way to work, because these places are hot spots for Pokémon as well.

The pace of the game quickens when you board the train! You’ll be frantically trying to swipe every PokéStops that your train passes by or battle any Pokémon you come across before it’s too far from your reach. It’s the perfect distraction for your usual boring train ride; you’re even likely to miss your stop when you’re too engrossed on the capture screen.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not take a train down all the way until its final stop just for the sole purpose of catching Pokémon? You can also get off at stations with a high concentration of PokéStops, and probably explore the ones you don’t frequent often as well!

Just make sure not to hog the reserved seats or block the doorways – you don’t see Ash Ketchum being an impolite brute in the television series!

8. Residential Neighbourhoods

If you’re just not feeling the mood for travelling to faraway places to catch Pokémon, there’s no need to do so! Your neighbourhood is also another perfect place to expand your Pokédex collection. Many playgrounds and parks are often frequented by trainers due to the number of PokéStops situated nearby.

There are also neighbourhoods that hold a greater number of certain Pokémon than others; players have reported capturing Magikarps at Lorong Chuan while Eevees are a common sight at Tampines West. It’s not uncommon to see a bunch of people congregating under the block, swiping their phones and sharing their captures in excitement.

So if you’re looking for a reason to use that old bicycle of yours, other than staying in shape, this would be the perfect time to do so. Explore your neighbourhood and the adjoining ones, and find out what they have to offer in the world of Pokémon GO!

Have you marked any of these places for your next country-wide catching spree? Get your Poké Balls ready and definitely drop by these places when you can. Who knows? You’ll probably catch a Gyarados or (if you’re super lucky!) a Dragonite while exploring, much to the envy of your rivals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm7Apvhj4OQ

重点来了,Taupo Tandem Skydiving和Taupo Bungy Jump and Cliff Hanger还有Huka Fall Waterjet Boat有联合推出优惠。

Waitomo

16 Roberts St, Taupo

lol

Pork Ribs & Brownies!

Big Breakfast all day err daysss

Hard Rock Cafe's

Hard Rock Cafe's Brownies!

一个澳洲阿姨看到我狼狈的样子,跟我说:“Girl, you have to see the beauty in yourself.”,哈哈哈哈,我当时那个样子根本称不上beauty好嘛?

我过后会写一篇类似 “why you must visit gold coast”(还没想好正式的题目)的文章,stay tuned!

Mt Bromo

Imo Teo

Day 1:9/12/2015

Day 3:11/12/2015

Day 4:12/12/2015

Day 5:13/12/2015

Day 6:14/12/2015

Zurich到Luzern(一人14.5CHF),Luzern到Grindelwald(一人21.5CHF),Grindelwald到Basel(一人33.5CHF),Basel到Paris(一人142CHF)。

入住Magic Hotel(RM520 包含早餐)。

Luzern(琉森)

Day 7:15/12/2015

Grindelwald

Day 8:16/12/2015

Day 9:17/12/2015

Day 10:18/12/2015

Day 11:19/12/2015

Laduree

Day 12:20/12/2015

Day 13:21/12/2015

Day 14:22/12/2015

Day 15:23/12/2015

搭Rossy Bus(一个人一趟11欧元)去机场,星巴克解决晚餐。

這家位於清邁寧曼路的最潮咖啡廳Ristr8to Coffee(全名:Doppio Ristr8to Latte Art Cafe)可不得了,它的咖啡好喝到爆!

Absolute Thai Hillside Villa!

Absolute Thai Hillside Villa

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Antoine Taveneaux

Christopher Meneboeuf

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Kirilos

Phillipe Teuwen

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Goh PS

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

travel horoscope

Moyan Brenn

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Lies Thru A Lens

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Lachlan Fearnley

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Brad Weber

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Kim Traynor

Pedro Szekely

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Katiebowl

Diliff

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Daniel Mayer

travel horoscope

Nic McPhee

图片来源: Alexas_Fotos

Diliff

Nazir Amin

C'est la Jez

Feel~
